Cooking, Crafting, Dreaming…it's what I do

So, we’re just relaxing December 31, 2009

Filed under: Random Ramblings — knottywitch @ 4:13 pm

watching a movie, hubby on the couch, me in my chair working on our afghan and there’s a knock at the door – it’s 11pm – hubby and I look at each other, then the door and in unison holler “Back door!”, you see, we close off the front door during the winter (hang a curtain over) because there isn’t enough room for all the boots and coats in our “entry way”, it creates a huge mess, and the LR is so boxy it just blasts it with cold and ends up staying that way every time the door is opened.

Well, the response we get from the other side is “It’s the police” So again, in unison we holler “The who?!”

Hubby gets up and opens the door, invites the officer in as he’s explaining he’s here about our child (that’s what I heard).

I start to mumble “Oh yeah, you need back up then (as I climb from beneath my project out of the chair) ’cause I’m fixin’ to go get her”

He steps into the house and says “Yes, I’m here to check the welfare and wellbeing of a 2-year-old.” I stop dead in my tracks, and explain – “Oh, you’ve got the wrong house then, we don’t have babies here any more”

He continues on with “J from Brooklyn…” the look of realization hits Dh and I together, “Oh, ok – now we know what you’re talking about!”

You see, a friend of the family has had his 2-year-old son for an extended visit (since Sept. so far), but he lost his phone before Christmas – and so Mom hasn’t been able to talk to the little guy, and Dad hasn’t gotten in touch with any one to get the number to call her either.

                                    Brilliant, not.

Now we’re all on the same page, and get the officer in touch with the Dad in question, give him the number and all is well  (and quiet) once again.

The officer appologized, adding “Oh wow, you guys really have nothing to do with this, you’re just sitting here chillin’.” What can we say, I don’t blame her – I’d be calling the police too.

Actually, the Dad would have been, ’cause I’d have… well, you understand. Who in their right mind keeps a Momma from getting in touch with her baby like that!

Hopefully, that’s the last of the excitement for us for 2009.

For a minute, I thought he was coming to tell us brown and green were illegal now and try to take my afghan away – he was going to need back up for that too, I’m not even finished with it yet! Yeah, we’re living a wild life here, lol.

Soup is on, and the bread is rising December 30, 2009

Ok – we’re having Home-made chicken soup and bread for dinner tonight. That is also one of my resolutions for the New Year – menu planning, and working on my time management skills…or lack there of It’s not that any one here ever skips a meal, but I enjoy baking and there are times when I’ll be cooking the evening meal and think “oh wow, I should have made bread, rolls, or bread sticks to go with this” So yeah, I need to plan it out a bit better. Of course, the fact that I hate my kitchen doesn’t help. But, that’s another story, and part of the renovation dreams 😉

Coincidently, I received my first seed catalog in the mail today. Quiet nod to another thing on my list – plan the gardens in advance. We don’t have a lot of space to work with, so in order for us to make the most of it we really have to learn to garden better with the seasons. Last year, we really over planted – we ended up with collard greens, pumpkins, and cucumbers in the front yard with the strawberries and mint. Now that the strawberries are spreading like wild fire (not to mention the mint), I doubt we’ll get away with that this year too.

While I am not adverse to planting food in the front – I think we’re going to have to till the other ‘side’ of the front yard to add much more this coming season. I’m thinking edible and medicinal herbs. I’ll still keep some in the pot arrangement I had this year, very convient for grilling, which we do a lot of.

I would like to have the entire place landscaped in edibles. We plan to add a few dwarf fruit trees, grapes and blueberries this year. It will be years before we see much from it, I know – but some things really are worth waiting for 🙂

Still working on my jump-start into 2010. Bit by bit – I’m getting there. Off to work on my afghan now while the bread bakes.

Jump Start on Goals for the New Year December 29, 2009

Well, the hustle and bustle of Christmas is behind us – I hope you all had a wonderful one! Ours was a little…off , in some ways. My Mother spent Christmas Eve in the hospital, her oxygen had dropped dangerously low. She is home now, and hopefully on the mend. We’re worried, but will stay positive. My daughter’s future FIL had a stoke on Christmas, not his first I am afraid. Other than that – we did spend the holiday together with family and friends, and it was all it should be.

Still and all, it’s behind us – what lays ahead no one can really know. I however have learned to focus on things I can and do have an impact on, and let all else come to pass as it will or won’t.

That being said – my focus for 2010 is something that has been on my mind, and something I will be writing about some. It’s not so much that I plan to make any grand changes – but I do want to add onto some of the changes I have been working towards through the years.

Right now, I have 2 crochet projects in progress. One is an afghan for hubby and I to use on our bed.

The other project I have in progress is a throw for our living room. It’s also done in an alternate stitch, sc and slip stitches. It’s going to take a LOT of yarn for such a small thing. But, I love it. I apologize for the pictures, it’s not the camera this time – it’s me, LOL. My Dad gave me his camera which is a much nicer one than I had – I just have to learn to use it properly. Also something to work on into the new year 😉

Needless to say, one of the things I am focusing on this year is making things for our home. I have always dreamed of having a home filled with hand-made items, both for function and decoration.

I also plan to get started on making gifts for holidays and personal occasions through out the year – and not just starting in the fall. Procrastiation is not a virtue – which sucks, since I have such a skill for it.

Now the house is full – and it’s time to start dinner. See, I should have started posting earlier. Oh well, I guess I have some work to do in that one area.

Happy Birthday, Girlie December 23, 2009

Pictures from our early gift to our friend and neighbor. Tomorrow she’ll get her frame with some of the pictures uploaded to it for her “actual” Birthday Gift. It’s amazing how something so small and simple can bring such joy to someones life. It’s also a pleasure to see, and a blessing to share. I’m not sure who was more excited – her or us!

Wow, that tree is really pink, LOL.

I’m still here…sort of. December 22, 2009

Things are kind of crazy here right now…much like your own homes I am sure – ’tis the season and all that 😉  I’ve still been crocheting – but I’m not posting pictures of the projects until after Christmas. I’m wanting to leave something a surprise. That’s not as easy as one might think – especially  for hand-made items. My daughter went to spend a couple of nights at a friends – so I quickly started an item for her, and in she walks, unannounced. Since she’s the only girl in the family, it’s hard to convince her the purple item isn’t for her…

We’ve adopted a neighbor of ours who has mental health issues. Her family has nothing to do with her (she spent Thanksgiving here with a couple of her friends because she wasn’t invited to her “family” dinner – because it’s just for “real” family) – she was adopted. Breaks my heart really. Her Birthday is tomorrow, though we’ve already given her the gift from us (a pink Christmas Tree – and it IS pink) and all that goes with it. We also have a digital picture frame (also pink) we’re giving to her with a picture of her and her 2 friends who were here for Thanksgiving, and pictures we took while decorating her tree.

She belongs to an independent living program, and I’m only almost as impressed with them as I am with her parents. She has been complaining about her heat, oven and furnace since October – here it is December, what ever was going finally totally went. End result, her gas line was clogged and leaking, plus there are 6 pilots for her home and only 2 were functioning. She had to vacate the apt. while repairs were made. She called her “Mom” but got no response, and the program was going to place her into a group home until her apt. could be deemed safe again. Well, that didn’t happen either – she came and stayed with us. She’s home again, though here every day after she’s done with her sessions at the program site. She has a bad hip, and has already had surgery. Now that she’s healed up, we’ve got her working with the wii fit with us. I swear, if I had the money, I’d buy her a system of her own with it! She does some of the simpler yoga moves, and the balance games. She also loves the hula hoop and soccer calorie burner games – yesterday, we had to make her stop after logging in over 40 minutes! But, she’s lost 3.5 lbs so far, and is so excited. I’m just happy to see her moving a little better. It’s hard with winters here, even walking becomes a dangerous adventure for her  just to get to the bus stop or our house on a daily basis let alone any extra  for the purpose of exercise.

That’s about it for me for now. The house is empty and I really must get the sewing machine dragged out while I can…

We’re all heading home tomorrow – it’s been a beautiful trip, aside from the weather. Cold, cloudy, and rain every where we turn. We’re going home to snow though. I have a few pictures from graduation to share – however Private First Class D.M.C chooses to have further pictures of him in his uniform after we get home, and he is around more family. It was SO cold graduation day – I couldn’t believe it! We’re having another Thanksgiving Dinner when we get home tomorrow – so it’s going to be a very busy homecoming for him. I can’t wait!
