No, I’m not working outside the home again. I’m not sure what lies ahead for me in that regard. I’ve been a bit of a miserable home maker as of late though, and it finally sunk in why – because I wasn’t doing it. Yes, I’ve been doing my chores, no one has missed a meal, or a snack for that matter. I still bake, and mate socks (although, usually a pair at a time…) and all else that’s implied with being a home maker. But, it’s about making the home too – not just maintaining it.

So, yesterday I woke up took an ibuprofen and went to work on ironing the fabric I purchased weeks ago to make some kitchen accessories. For my $6.00 splurge – I expect to get curtains, cushions for the benches to the kitchen table, a couple of pot holders and maybe a table runner.

A seamstress I am not – but I do enjoy the idea of sewing immensely. That’s what keeps me trying. Of course, if I tried more often – I might be better at it. None the less, I now have new Kitchen Curtains hanging. I even made the tie backs with a little ruffle. I was a little concerned about trying that with this fabric, it’s upholstery fabric I purchased at Ocean State Job Lots…which is a bargain variety store of sorts. Three yards for $6 was too much to pass up, and I decided to get as much out of it as possible.

Next, I will start working on cushions for the benches. The comforter I’m repurposing for the padding is now in the washing machine, and then I will be off and running with that. In the mean time, I have a few scrap pieces from the curtains, and am working on cutting squares for some pot holders to put together with some scrap denim squares I’ve got lying around. Now that I’m moving along with it – I’m excited to see just how much I can get out of my little splurge.

Starting the New Year Strong! December 31, 2010

I’ve already made progress on 2 of my 4 resolutions for the year. I have been baking a lot, so not much has been done in the crafting area. I did get my table moved into the kitchen, and the bar moved into the living-room. I love it! The first night, Sammy (my friend and neighbor) stopped by with her sister, and we sat around the table until after midnight just laughing and joking while the kids hung out in the living-room. The next day, my oldest and dearest friend, who lives in Iowa, stopped by for a visit with her kids. We invited Sammy over again, and we all sat around the table until long after midnight laughing, joking, and reminiscing. Loving it! Plus the bar gives DD more usable space in the living room to organize her art supplies and girlie stuffs

I went to the Dr.’s on Thursday. It was funny, my Mom had called while I was on my way out, I explained my resolution to her. She was so happy. I went on and on about how I promised to do what ever it is they say, try what ever it is they suggested and so on…Then I got there to find they already diagnosed me, they just failed to mention it. The took X-rays last year (or earlier this year, I forget) and found I have an over-straightening in my neck. What they left out is – it’s caused by arthritis. In fact, I have arthritis in my neck and both shoulders. When it feels like the muscles are shredded – they are (eeewww), and this Dr. went on to explain that what happens then is the blood capillaries burst causing hemorrhaging in the spaces created by the shredding, causing scarring to build up. Which can not be repaired. Damn and eeewwww! He also questioned me on my hobbies, to make sure I’m not doing anything to further damage the area…like gardening. Here’s where part of the promise I made to Mom went out the window –

Me “Um, we don’t even have a lawn.”

Him “Oh good, I won’t have to worry about that then.”

Me “I’m sorry, you misunderstand, we don’t have a lawn because it’s all a garden…”

Then I went on to explain that my husband does help a lot with it. I generally sit while weeding, and since I don’t work outside the home, it’s really done in “little bits” every day. Not me going out there for 3-4 hours at a clip bending and raking every week. I also went on to explain that with hubby on the road so much, we’re planning on starting to put in some raised beds to keep it simpler for us both. Our herbs are in pots, and we hope to add more creative container gardening to our lay out as well. He said that’s all good, plus to use the rolling gardening bench  so I can sit better while weeding. Fair enough.

He also mentioned that there is some nerve damage (sensory loss) that he’d like to keep an eye on. Also, that my arches are sagging – to which I informed him that at this stage of the game – pretty much everything is sagging…Such is life. Oh well. I am still going to be following through with it.

Now, I’m going to be looking for ways to design our garden space that will be both more productive, and less labor intensive. Guess our procrastination method of “It’s time, lets throw it all in the ground and see what happens.” is out the window, LOL!

Priorities of late… February 12, 2010

Priorities is may be not the right word – but this is so cute, I just had to share. I am an occasional game geek.  Yesterday I spent the day playing Fable 2 on my son’s X-Box 360. My son and nephew only had a half day and they came here right after school with a friend, and I was still geekin’ on the game.  When DD’s beau called to see what time the friend needed a ride home about 3pm or so – I told her “It would be best around 5pm because we’re eating dinner at your aunts.” At which point, both younger boys turn to me and say “We’re eating at Auntie’s (DS)/my(DN) house tonight?”  The looks and tone said it all – they really thought I was so into the game I just wasn’t cooking dinner. I was so sure, I ventured to guess out loud to which they both sheepishly responded with a “Yeeessss” “But, we weren’t complaining, that’s why we made sandwiches, and have been snacking and stuff – we know you don’t get to geek on the game a lot, it’s ok”

I laughed so hard, I almost fell off the couch!

And then, I continued with my game until it was time to leave for dinner 😉

Today, I baked garbagebread with broccoli, ham,and cheese. Yum! I also baked a pineapple upside down cake – no pictures, it’s all gone. Every darn bit of it. Heck, one of our regualr dinner guests – who happens to be neighbors with my sister – stopped by here, then there to my sister’s – next thing I know, she’s calling me wanting to know if she can send him back to grab plates for her house, hehe. Yeah, there’s  nothing left.

I also made the meatballs for Sunday’s Timballi and warned every one away from them, the remaining ground beef I made mini-meatloaves in muffin tins to add to the freezer inventory just to make me feel extra accomplished for the day <sigh>

Now, I’m just patiently waiting for my turn on the game.

Jump Start on Goals for the New Year December 29, 2009

Well, the hustle and bustle of Christmas is behind us – I hope you all had a wonderful one! Ours was a little…off , in some ways. My Mother spent Christmas Eve in the hospital, her oxygen had dropped dangerously low. She is home now, and hopefully on the mend. We’re worried, but will stay positive. My daughter’s future FIL had a stoke on Christmas, not his first I am afraid. Other than that – we did spend the holiday together with family and friends, and it was all it should be.

Still and all, it’s behind us – what lays ahead no one can really know. I however have learned to focus on things I can and do have an impact on, and let all else come to pass as it will or won’t.

That being said – my focus for 2010 is something that has been on my mind, and something I will be writing about some. It’s not so much that I plan to make any grand changes – but I do want to add onto some of the changes I have been working towards through the years.

Right now, I have 2 crochet projects in progress. One is an afghan for hubby and I to use on our bed.

The other project I have in progress is a throw for our living room. It’s also done in an alternate stitch, sc and slip stitches. It’s going to take a LOT of yarn for such a small thing. But, I love it. I apologize for the pictures, it’s not the camera this time – it’s me, LOL. My Dad gave me his camera which is a much nicer one than I had – I just have to learn to use it properly. Also something to work on into the new year 😉

Needless to say, one of the things I am focusing on this year is making things for our home. I have always dreamed of having a home filled with hand-made items, both for function and decoration.

I also plan to get started on making gifts for holidays and personal occasions through out the year – and not just starting in the fall. Procrastiation is not a virtue – which sucks, since I have such a skill for it.

Now the house is full – and it’s time to start dinner. See, I should have started posting earlier. Oh well, I guess I have some work to do in that one area.

I want this tablecloth November 18, 2009

I am going to make this tablecloth. I don’t have a table, but I will have this tablecloth. If I start right now, I may finish it by the time we can have a table. Of course, one of the kids have to move out, so I can take out the middle bedroom, so I can expand my kitchen so I can have room for a table. They really screwed up when they turned our house into a 2 family home. I get as far as “rental properties” go, 2 rents>one – but they sort of forgot that there would be 2 families the house would have to serve. If a family requires 3 br. don’t ya think they have some people who they might want to feed, may be even people little enough to where they’re required – by law- to feed? Hm? Ya think? I shouldn’t complain. If it weren’t for the fact that the previous owner was a slumlord who collected the rent, and failed to pay the mortgage we wouldn’t have gotten such a deal on the place.

But I digress – the pattern is called  Puritan Crocheted Tablecloth – There is just something about it that speaks to my soul. If you click on the picture, it will bring you to the pattern. Just in case it speaks to you, too 😉
