Laundry Soap ing.

Years ago, I read about home-made laundry soap recipes online in a forum that is no longer available.

There were many shared, both liquid and powder, I’ve always preferred the powder. Even when we lived where we had harder water, I would just put the powder into a jar with hot water, shake it up to dissolve and then put it into the machine from there. For me, it’s more of a storage issue. It takes less room to store 6 months worth of detergent in one container in powder form, as opposed to jugs of liquid. Plus, I have a tendency to lean towards laziness to be honest, and the powder is much easier to complete. There are many recipes for H.M detergent still to be found, I’m sharing with you the one we use.
1 -55 ounce box of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda)
1-76 ounce box of Borax
2 – 5.5 ounce bars of Fels-Naptha laundry soap finely grated.
Combine all ingredients well into a large (we use a large cereal container) container with a good lid. Shake it up a bit if you’d like.
To use, just add 2 tablespoons worth per load.
It does not suds. This threw me off for a while at first. I tested it against a national brand name, and it won – hands down – for us. For a while, I wasn’t able to find the ingredients to make it where we’d moved to. I had forgotten all about it until we bought this house and my Father bought me front loading machines. These require “He” soaps, which are more expensive. Ironically enough, where they differ from ‘regular’ soaps, (aside from in price) is they are low sudsing. Seems the agent in ‘regular’ detergents is damaging to the belts in the front loading machines.
For under $11, I can make enough soap to do laundry for the 6 of us who live down stairs, 3 who live upstairs and it lasts us about 2 months per batch.

I went back to school today January 14, 2011

No, it’s not that I’ve gone back to school to further my own education. I went to try to keep get my son on track with his. I won’t bore you with the details. Suffice it to say, he’s grounded.

It was so much easier with DD – she was homeschooled, lol. At least I knew what was going on then!

So, DD comes into the kitchen and says –

“I don’t get it, you guys cook so much, but we never eat any leftovers.” That reason is two-fold. First, as I mentioned before, we freeze portions of most meals for Hubby to take on the road for lunches the following week (or weeks) ahead. Second – we eat the left overs alright – we just make new meals from them. That roast we had last Sunday, on Monday it was in the soup for dinner. Ironically enough, it’s what was on the stove when D.D came in and made her query.

The recipe on the back of the bag of lentils called for ham and celery – both of which we did not have. So we diced up the roast, and added carrots instead. I sliced up a small loaf of bread that was getting a little hard, buttered, seasoned, and toasted it on the oven. Voila, we had the perfect winter fare on the table in 30 minutes.

My S.S. and Me 😉

There are not many pictures of my S.S and I together in adulthood. This is strange, because we’re together so much. Of course, I’m usually on the other end of the camera, and she’s doing her best to steer clear of it all together…The last picture of just her and I is from when Hubby and I were bringing her to the hospital – not one either of us wants floating around the ‘net. Trust me, I’ve seen it!

This year, we’ve promised each other to work on changing that. Starting with New Year’s Eve, we did. This is us at the gathering we had with our neighbor and friend.

Momma & her Honey

Here’s the funny part. Remember my “User error” issue I was having with my camera? Well, because of that, we dug out my old camera for the pictures. I slid in a card, but couldn’t transfer the pictures to the card – which is how I upload them to the computer. Then, I couldn’t find the camera. I found the wire to transfer the photos from the internal memory – but no camera. I wasn’t sure if it was left next door, and always forget to ask Hubby if he put it some where when we talk on the phone. Well, today – while putting away some of his paperwork – I found it in a drawer. WooHoo – now I have to find the cord – again. First, let me see if I can get the pictures to transfer to the card. No go. Open it up, and look at the card – it’s not the S.D card – it is the holder type card that is supposed to be in the slot in my computer when not in use to keep dust and junk from that port. Major DUH. No wonder the pictures wouldn’t transfer!

                                                      Oh well, all better now.

All together now!

My twist on Olivia’s Butterfly January 12, 2011

Finally, some of the promised pictures of Olivia’s Butterfly I wrote about just before Christmas. I mentioned I made one for my DD in Red Heart’s Plush Yarn, and then I made her a scarf with the butterfly design on each end as well. The pictures are not the greatest, and she’s not such a willing model any more – but here they are none the less!

Packing a Lunch January 11, 2011

Well, Hubby is off to work for another week. The only way I can ensure he eats semi-healthy with the $15 a day per-diem he gets for working out-of-town is to send him with food as well. Seriously, the only other option for him eating 3 meals a day on that at all would be a dollar menu – and that’s not particularly healthy fare. At least, his choices on them are not!

This week, he’s got 2 containers each of turkey soup, venison stew, baked ziti, chicken with creamy basil sauce, and the tenderloin dinner we had for today as well. He also has pasta & sauce, mac&cheese, several baked potatos, tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly, bread, fruit, and a variety of canned goods to balance out the meals he cooks on the road.

During the week, when we cook, we’ll set aside plates in the freezer for him to take to work for the following week. So far, it’s working out fairly well. Of course, there are some meals we’ll have during the week that just don’t freeze very well, so we’ll double up – so to speak, on others.

The Hat has found a home! January 10, 2011

This little guy is visiting with his Dad, my brothers room-mate until March. He stays with us while Dad works. I think the hat suits him perfectly. He seems to love it. Of course, he’s only 3 and really loves it when his t-shirts have the same characters as his “Big Boy” pants… Still, he’s awfully happy with it, and it is really warm. Plus it matches his coat. ‘Nuff said.
